New Jersey’s ‘Seinfeld Bill’

From Sitcom Humor to Real-World Legislation: The Inspiration Behind New Jersey’s ‘Seinfeld Bill’

“The Jerry Seinfeld Show,” a beloved American sitcom from the ’90s, is known for its humorous take on everyday life, often exploring peculiar social nuances. One such episode that left a lasting impression on its audience revolved around the comedic consequences of unsolicited telemarketing calls. Let’s draw some comparisons when reality is written into a TV Show.

During the show, Jerry Seinfeld gets a call and turns the tables on a telemarketer, asking them how they would like it if he called them at home. This particular storyline struck a chord with viewers, highlighting the inconvenience and intrusion of unsolicited calls. Today, it has inspired real-world legislation in the form of the ‘Seinfeld Bill’ in New Jersey, which aims to provide greater consumer protection against intrusive telemarketing calls.

The ‘Seinfeld Bill,’ which was signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy on May 16, 2023 in New Jersey, is a recent development in the field of consumer protection. The bill aims to prevent deceptive or fraudulent practices by businesses during telephone transactions, an important aspect of maintaining a fair marketplace.

The Seinfeld Bill enforces strict regulations on telemarketing procedures. Telemarketers must disclose their identity by stating their name and the person or business they represent, and also state the purpose of the call within the first 30 seconds of their call.

Furthermore, the law mandates that telemarketers display their mailing address on any website they own and operate. They are also required to provide the address of any business they represent during their calls. This rule ensures a greater level of transparency and accountability from these telemarketing companies.

Senator Jon Bramnick, voiced his support for the new law, stating, “When you answer a telemarketer’s call, you should know right up front who they are and who they work for. If they’re on the up and up, telemarketing firms should have no issue with this bill.”

For those who’ve been inconvenienced by untimely telemarketing calls, the Seinfeld Bill brings welcome relief. The legislation bans unsolicited telemarketing calls between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m., local time, at the customer’s location. This measure is designed to prevent consumers from being disturbed during unsociable hours.

The Seinfeld Bill has a significant implication for senior citizens who often find themselves on the receiving end of deceptive telemarketing calls. Many seniors face an overwhelming number of phone scams, making this law an essential step towards their protection.

Assemblyman Moriarty, a prominent advocate for senior rights, also commented on the new law. He stated that “There’s an overwhelming number of scams targeting seniors by phone. This new law will clearly alert seniors that a telemarketer is seeking to sell them something, and the law will provide them with a level of protection. It’s important to do what we can to protect our seniors from falling victim to scams. This may also help cut down on the overwhelming number of calls seniors receive at home.”

‘Seinfeld Bill’: A Trailblazer Tackling the Nationwide Telemarketing Problem

Telemarketing has long been a national issue in the United States, with consumers regularly receiving disruptive and often unwanted calls. However, on a state level, New Jersey has recently taken a bold step to mitigate this problem. The ‘Seinfeld Bill’ that was recently signed is a noteworthy addition to consumer protection laws.

This could encourage other states to adopt similar measures, resulting in improved telemarketing practices across the country. If other states follow New Jersey’s example, it could result in a nationwide enhancement of consumer rights, leading to fairer telemarketing practices.

Federal Do Not Call Registry The Federal Do Not Call Registry: An Extra Layer of Protection Against Unwanted Calls

In addition to state-specific measures like the Seinfeld Bill, consumers across the nation can also register with the Federal Do Not Call Registry. This national registry allows people to opt out of most telemarketing calls, providing an additional layer of protection against unsolicited contact.

As such, consumers have both federal and, in some cases, state-level resources to help them manage and reduce unwanted telemarketing calls.

Governor Murphy’s Endorsement: A Step Towards a More Ethical Marketplace

Governor Murphy expressed his pride in signing the bill into law, emphasizing that it provides much-needed transparency. This law represents a significant advancement in protecting consumers from aggressive or unethical telemarketing practices, thereby promoting a more balanced and respectful marketplace.

Exceptions to the ‘Seinfeld Bill’

New Jersey officials clarify that the rules barring unsolicited sales calls and mandating disclosure of specific telemarketer information do not apply under certain conditions. Specifically, if a customer initiates contact with a telemarketer either through a phone call or a website, and explicitly asks for a follow-up sales call or any other form of contact, these rules are not applicable.

Finn Law Firm's Client Reviews & Testimonials

Based on 148 reviews
I found Finn Law Group in July 2019 when I couldn’t find a way to get rid of my timeshare. It had been given as a gift and I realized a few years later that it was not something I should have agreed to take on. After calling the timeshare directly to have them buy back or take it back, they simply replied that they don’t do such things. I searched online for timeshare attorneys and found Finn Law Group. Mr. Finn and his team put me at ease and said they would work with me to get rid of the timeshare but made sure to tell me that it would take time. With COVID hitting less than a year later, it set the timeline back considerably. Finally, I got the call from Louise in January 2026 saying that the timeshare had been taken back and I was free and clear. It was one of the best calls I’ve ever received in recent memory. After securing the group’s services in 2019, Louise stuck with me and kept me updated and protected. I cannot thank her and everybody at Finn Law Group enough for their help with this matter. I highly recommend Mr. Finn, Louise, and everyone at Finn Law Group for their services. It was a long and nerve-wracking journey, but they succeeded and I’m eternally grateful. THANK YOU!
