BBB Tip: Travel and Vacation Scams

Family is going on a trip

Don’t let vacation scams ruin your summer travel plans.

Be aware and prepared so you don’t fall victim to this vacation scams.  Here is what to look for:

Properties listed that promise low fees and great amenities with the “owner” creating a sense of urgency to get you to pay before you do the research.

  • Talk to the owner. If you are not using a service that verifies properties, do not negotiate the rental via email.
  • Get the phone number and ask detailed questions about the property.  If the owner has vague answers, RED FLAG.
  • Do your homework and check the public records. Look up the address on Google and confirm the property matches the one advertised.
  • Look for reviews and ask for references.
  • Never wire money or use a prepaid debit card. Once you send the money there is no way to get it back!  Pay with a credit card to avoid being out fo money.
